Your problem is just a statistic the police report.  That's it.
Perhaps they stole a bag with a computer in it.  Perhaps they got your purse or wallet with drivers license and/or credit cards.  Not only do you have the hassle of replacing them, you have the worry about your identity being stolen.  Perhaps Lifelock or another identity protection service will help.  But, first you need to drive the vehicle to work or back home.  Then, get a new piece of glass scheduled and installed asap.
So, here are some things to remember to do:
1)    Call the Police to report - even if just online.
2)    Take photos of the damage.  Keep them for your insurance company or for any police reports, or to document where your vehicle was and the damage.  Don't touch anything unless you have gloves - the glass shards are very sharp and will cut you and could damage your upholstery.
3)    Double check to see what, if anything, was stolen.  Write down everything you can.
4)    If personal information such as insurance documents, drivers license, credit cards, valuables, etc were taken, write that all down.  Contact your insurance company for new documents and to report the loss.  If you have insurance coverage for glass damage/vandalism, file a claim.  Contact the state to get a new drivers license and the credit card companies to find out if your credit cards have been used and to replace them.  Contact one of the credit reporting agencies (Equifax, Experian, Transunion) so they can note the loss and prevent anyone from changing your information and opening new accounts.
5)    Contact AGLASS4U at 888-399-8836 to schedule getting new glass installed and the broken glass cleaned up.  We will be happy to contact your insurance company while you are on hold to assist getting the claim done asap.  We also will do everything we can to prioritize your work so you have as little time without your vehicle as possible.
6)    Put plastic over the opening to keep rain out and protect the interior while you are waiting.  You might keep a plastic bag and tape in the trunk just in case you are ever vandalized.
7)    Contact your local representatives requesting that those who are caught stealing and vandalizing any persons property are given maximum penalties.  Unfortunately, we've seen many cases where the police have caught the thief/vandal, but won't do anything because they know the courts will not punish the perpetrator.  Thieves know this so they don't fear being caught.  Until society demands that property crime be treated severely, things will not change.  You, as a victim of these crimes, need to speak loudly and demand justice.  Hold your elected officials accountable.
8)    Smile and take a deep breath. Getting mad won't help anything.  In the future, be aware of your surroundings.  Thieves many times targets high traffic areas and watch as people come and go.  They watch to see who hides things in their vehicles.  Many times, they walk by casing the vehicle out.  Then they or a friend walks by, smashes the glass, grabs whatever they can and hops in a waiting nearby vehicle.  If they suspect an alarm, they will not open the door as they know it will trigger the alarm. If they stole credit cards, they will use them right away.
When you leave your vehicle, walk to a point just before you cannot see it any longer and watch to see if anyone walks by your vehicle or is suspicious.  If you suspect something, call the police and continue to watch.  Get a description of the people and license number(s) of vehicle(s).
